Hugh Elder began piping at age 4 under the instruction of John McKernan and won many novice and amateur solo piping awards as a youth and as a member of the L.A. Scots Junior Band. Light music study was pursued with James Thomson and pibroch with James McColl. Hugh was a member of the L.A. Scots band when they won the Grade 2 World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1997. His tune, Pipe Major Richard Parkes appears in the Vortex Street Collection.
