Testimonials:

The Rising Sun Collection book is Naismith’s analysis of the first written description of piobaireachd theory and notation. This Compleat Theory was written around 1760 by the 20-year-old Joseph MacDonald from Durness on Scotland’s north coast, en route to India.

Naismith then presents 24 of his own pibroch compositions based on MacDonald’s principles.

“It is manna for the serious piobaireachd student: complex, frustrating, rewarding.”

Naismith’s compositions are varied and innovative. They are fun, musically and technically challenging, always atmospheric and often poignant. They feel different to today’s piobaireachd.

Jack Taylor is a highly regarded expert on piobaireachd whose accomplishments including winning the Silver Chanter, a recipient of the Highland Society of London Gold Medal, and served as the Piobaireachd Society president for twelve years.

I just received my copy of The Rising Sun Collection and before taking a deep dive into the material, I  was immediately struck by 2 things. What a remarkable bit of musical scholarship and what a prodigious bit of composing.  So impressive.
